iDEAL vs Bancontact: they are not the same market

"We support Dutch-language checkout" and "we support the Belgian market" are two different claims. iDEAL and Bancontact are separate payment rails, run by separate operators, each usable in only one country. The single most common gap we find on our checkout audits is a store that nailed iDEAL for the Netherlands and simply never added Bancontact for Belgium — treating Belgium as an extension of the Dutch market instead of its own.

Two rails, not two names for the same thing

iDEAL only works for Dutch bank accounts. Bancontact only works for Belgian bank accounts/cards. Neither substitutes for the other — a Belgian shopper cannot pay with iDEAL, and a Dutch shopper cannot pay with Bancontact. Payment-processor documentation (Stripe, NORBr) is explicit that merchants selling into both the Netherlands and Belgium need to integrate both methods separately; there is no shared fallback.

NL figures: Dutch Payments Association (Betaalvereniging Nederland). Bancontact volume: Bancontact press release. We could not find an equally rigorous "% of BE online transactions" figure for Bancontact from a primary source — a widely-repeated "78%" claim circulates in marketing blogs with no cited source or year, so we're not using it. A 2023–24 consumer-preference survey (via Febelfin/RetailDetail) found roughly 70–73% of Belgians say they prefer or most often use Bancontact online, which is a stated-preference number, not a measured transaction share — flagged here rather than presented as more precise than it is.

Who operates each, and why that matters for reliability

iDEAL was created in 2005 by a consortium of Dutch banks and was operated by Currence until the European Payments Initiative (EPI) acquired it in October 2023. Bancontact is operated by Bancontact Payconiq Company, based in Brussels and owned by major Belgian banks (Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING, KBC). EPI's 2023 acquisition covered Payconiq International SA, the Luxembourg-based technical layer behind the underlying app — not Bancontact Payconiq Company itself, which remains bank-owned. Different governance, different roadmap, different support channels if something breaks at checkout.

The mistake we see most

On our checkout audits, the single most common pattern isn't "no local payment method at all" — most foreign stores entering this region get at least iDEAL configured. It's that Belgium quietly inherits the Netherlands' setup: EUR pricing and shipping zones are correctly configured for both countries, but Bancontact specifically is missing, even though the store otherwise clearly intends to sell into Belgium. The fix isn't complicated — it's a checkout configuration change, not a translation problem — which is exactly why it's frustrating to leave on the table: the localization work is often already done, and the payment method is the one piece missing.
